About Quincy Underground Railroad Museum: Dr Richard Eells House
The Quincy Underground Railroad Museum at the Dr. Richard Eells House is one of the earliest documented Underground Railroad sites in the United States, recognized nationally by the Park Service. Visitors tour the original 1835 structure and stand where a runaway enslaved person named Charles sought refuge in 1842. The museum tells the true story of Charles, the free Black man Barryman Barnett who helped him, and Dr. Richard Eells, the white physician who took Charles in. The exhibits feature galleries explaining the escape attempts of enslaved people and the work of abolitionists fighting slavery, along with a video presentation providing historical context. School tours are available for sixth grade and up, with free admission for student groups. The venue opens seasonally with hours published online.
