About Matheson History Museum

Matheson History Museum houses permanent and temporary exhibits on Alachua County and Florida history within the former American Legion Hall in downtown Gainesville. Visitors explore galleries and the Mary Ann Cofrin Exhibit Hall, take free tours of current exhibitions, and browse the gift shop stocked with historic postcards, yearbooks, maps, and books on Florida history and local authors. The museum complex includes the Matheson Library & Archives, located in the restored 1933 Gainesville Gospel Tabernacle building, containing over 20,000 historic Florida postcards, 1,500 stereograph cards, photographs, documents, and artifacts available by research appointment. The Tison Tool Barn displays more than 1,000 historic tools from the 1850s to early twentieth century. Throughout the year, the museum hosts programs on local and Florida history, and general admission is free.
