About Long Homestead Historical Museum

The Long Homestead Historical Museum is a restored cedar log home where visitors explore ten period-furnished rooms depicting life in the 1800s. Built in 1829 by Benjamin Long, the house sits on the Erie Canal bank in Tonawanda, New York. The ground floor features six original fireplaces and brick partitions, while the second floor retains original flooring, walls, and woodwork. Furnishings throughout date between 1790 and 1840. Knowledgeable volunteer docents lead tours and answer questions as individuals, families, and school groups climb the steep interior staircases to discover how residents lived when the Canal served as a main route westward. The grounds include an herb garden, and a small bookstore operates on-site. The City of Tonawanda owns the Homestead, which the Historical Society of the Tonawandas operates. A nominal admission charge supports operations, with members and children under fourteen admitted free. Scheduled tours are available, and additional tours may be arranged by contacting the museum.
