About Harvey One Room School

Harvey One Room School is a restored brick schoolhouse in Bucyrus where visitors experience 19th century rural education through guided tours and seasonal events. School groups participate in lessons led by a "school marm," complete spell-offs, practice recitation, write on slate, and sit on the recitation bench or dunce chair depending on their behavior. Students pump water from the well, dance around the maypole, and use the outhouse. Community groups enjoy similar interactive activities including singing and classroom participation. The schoolhouse, built in 1876 on land homesteaded by the Harvey family, contains artifacts, replicas, and reproductions that visitors can handle. Located in the countryside between Ohio's largest cities, the museum meets third grade curriculum standards. Seasonal and themed events are open to the public, such as vintage baseball games and grandparent's day celebrations. The schoolhouse is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and operated by community volunteers and educators dedicated to preserving Crawford County's educational heritage.
