The Great Smoky Mountains Heritage Center in Townsend preserves and interprets the region's history through museum exhibits, a historic village, and educational programs. Visitors explore ancient pottery, stone tools, and artifacts dating back over 10,000 years discovered in the area, along with a significant Cherokee Native American Collection. The museum features hands-on activities led by live historic interpreters in authentic dress, indoor and outdoor exhibits ranging from firearms to forges, and guided bus tours of nearby Cades Cove. The Historic Village contains preserved and operating 19th-century Appalachian buildings including a cabin, barn, and mill. A 375-seat covered amphitheater hosts performances, while festivals and special events draw visitors throughout the year. Educational programs serve school groups and independent learners interested in regional heritage, archaeology, and mountain culture.
