FAU Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute in Fort Pierce operates the Ocean Discovery Visitors Center, where families explore research-themed exhibitions about marine science and technology. The center houses over 1,000 gallons of aquaria containing more than 80 different species of plants and animals. Visitors see live displays showcasing marine environments including seagrass beds and coral reefs, plus demonstrations of sustainable aquaculture systems. Current exhibitions cover marine biomedical and biotechnology, where researchers discover medicinal properties of marine chemicals; marine mammal conservation, featuring local dolphins and manatees alongside global whale species; aquaculture and stock enhancement; and marine ecosystem health. The institute, located on a 144-acre campus along the Indian River Lagoon, has conducted oceanographic research for nearly 50 years. The center opens Wednesday through Saturday, and a gift shop is available on-site. Public tours of the facility can be arranged through the venue's website.
