About Barrow County Museum

Barrow County Museum occupies the old Barrow County Jail, a granite structure built in 1914, where visitors explore the building's hanging tower and jail cells alongside exhibits on local history. The museum displays information about Senator Richard B. Russell and Fort Yargo, connecting visitors to the region's past. A small granite monument honoring unknown Confederate dead, originally positioned at Triangle Park in Rosehill Cemetery, now stands at the museum. Self-guided tours allow visitors to examine the jail's original architecture and period furnishings. General admission is free. The museum welcomes groups and individual visitors. The location sits in Winder within walking distance of the Historic County Courthouse and Main Street. Weekday hours run early afternoon through late afternoon, with arrangements available for Saturday tours or visits at other times through local contacts.
