The Anthracite Heritage Museum in Scranton interprets the history of hard coal mining and the immigrant communities of northeastern Pennsylvania. Visitors tour exhibits depicting life in the mines, mills, and factories, exploring family homes and neighborhoods through displays that include a kitchen exhibit, a saloon, and a local church. The museum also offers access to the Lackawanna Coal Mine Tour, where visitors descend 300 feet underground in a mine car to experience the winding tunnels and learn about historic mining methods. Adjacent to the museum, the Scranton Iron Furnaces showcase four massive stone blast furnaces from the early American iron industry, representing the Lackawanna Iron and Steel Company's once-dominant production capacity. The museum and furnaces host cultural events throughout the year. The complex operates Wednesday through Sunday, and tickets are sold online through the venue's website.
