About Prater's Mill Historic Site

Prater's Mill Historic Site is a restored 1855 grist mill complex in Dalton, Georgia where visitors tour operating mills and historic buildings. The site features a working grist mill powered by a Leffel turbine, the Meadows mill, and a cotton gin. Visitors explore the 1898 Prater's Store, Dr. Lacewell's Office, and Westbrook Barn, which houses the Goodness-Smith Farm Collection displaying antique tractors, cars and plows. The grounds showcase how the mill once served as a gathering place where farmers brought grain to be ground while their families shopped and visited. Live entertainment includes Appalachian clogging, country bands and gospel singers. Regional food vendors prepare Southern specialties like pit-cooked barbecue, fried pies and fresh-churned ice cream. The Prater's Mill Foundation, a volunteer nonprofit, operates and maintains the site, which is owned by Whitfield County. Trails and grounds open daily dawn to dusk.
