About Lackawanna Coal Mine Tour

Lackawanna Coal Mine Tour descends visitors 300 feet underground in a bright yellow portal bus into the old Slope #190, an actual anthracite mine originally opened in 1860. Once below ground, visitors explore winding gangways and rock tunnels with a knowledgeable guide to see three different anthracite coal veins, including the Monkey Vein and the Dead Chute. The guide demonstrates the methods used to extract coal and explains the history of deep mining work. Before descending, visitors can watch an introductory video in the theater or view mining exhibits in the Hoist House Museum. The mine maintains a constant temperature of 50 to 55 degrees, and suitable footwear is required for walking on wet and uneven surfaces.
