About Island Farm

Island Farm is a living history site on Roanoke Island that recreates everyday life in the 1850s, when islanders fed chickens, fished the sounds, and grew corn for grinding at the windmill while experiencing the Civil War, performing US Life-Saving Service rescues, and assisting the Wright Brothers. Visitors encounter hands-on demonstrations including blacksmithing, traditional agriculture, food preservation, hearth cooking, weaving, and woodworking. The farm features livestock interactions, opportunities to help with gardening, doll-making, nineteen-century games, and cart rides. Staff members tell the real story of the hardscrabble lives of Roanoke Islanders who settled after the Lost Colony and before major historical events. The site welcomes school groups with professionally developed programs aligned to North Carolina state standards. Island Farm charges admission and is located on Roanoke Island just north of Manteo, North Carolina.
