About Island Farm

Island Farm tells the story of Roanoke Island families in the 1850s through hands-on history across ten acres of heritage buildings and grounds. Visitors explore historic structures, watch blacksmithing and woodworking demonstrations, observe traditional agriculture and food preservation, and try weaving. A staff member may hand-make a corn husk doll for a child, lead visitors to feed heritage breed livestock in the chicken coop, or invite them to play nineteenth-century games beneath an old tree with swings. Hearth cooking demonstrations include samples of period food like fig cake and fresh-brewed tea. Daily activities vary and include cart rides, gardening work, and livestock interactions. The farm suits families with young children, who can touch and explore the buildings freely. Island Farm is located on Roanoke Island north of Manteo.
