About Historic Emmons Cottage

Historic Emmons Cottage is a restored 1886 Folk Victorian cottage that visitors can tour on the grounds of the Ormond Memorial Art Museum & Gardens in Ormond Beach. The two-story board and batten structure, built from Florida pine in a Shotgun style, contains two rooms downstairs and two small bedrooms upstairs across its 994 square feet. The cottage originally stood at the corner of Dix Avenue and Palmetto Street overlooking Halifax River before being relocated to its current location in 1998. Named after Julia T. Emmons, the earliest known resident listed in 1924, the cottage represents the vernacular architecture of Ormond Beach's pioneer settlement era. Visitors explore the house to understand early Florida residential construction and the lives of settlers during the town's founding period in the 1870s and 1880s. The cottage survived demolition through community effort and now stands as a preserved example of how working families lived during Ormond Beach's formative years.
