About Cape Hatteras Lighthouse

Cape Hatteras Lighthouse stands watch over one of the Atlantic Coast's most hazardous sections, where powerful ocean currents force ships toward the dangerous Diamond Shoals sandbar. Hundreds of shipwrecks in this area have earned it the reputation as the Graveyard of the Atlantic. Built in 1870, the iconic black-and-white striped lighthouse was constructed after an earlier 1803 sandstone tower proved too short and poorly visible to warn mariners effectively. The current lighthouse reaches 150 feet tall and features a first-order Fresnel lens using refraction technology. Visitors can climb the 257 steps to the observation deck and access a virtual tour and webcam to experience the lighthouse and viewing from the top. The Light Station is located in Buxton within Cape Hatteras National Seashore. Beach visits involve potential hazards including rip currents and strong waves that visitors should prepare for in advance.
