SEA LIFE Scarborough

Octopuses with three hearts. 420 million year-old sharks. Japanese spider crabs that measure a whopping 3m claw-to-claw.

Then there’s Penguin Island, an Otter River and even a seal hospital, plus special events like beach cleans and splashing about with real mermaids. A visit to SEA LIFE Scarborough has a lot to offer.

In our own words...

Step off the beach into an underwater world

After a Yorkshire day out that’s fun and teaches you a bit about the ocean too? Touring this Scarborough aquarium is a trip around the world’s oceans in a couple of hours – with a rainforest pitstop thrown in too.

The different zones are a real treat to wander round. You’ll see creatures of the Great Barrier Reef, including the blue spotted stingray, see sharks swimming overhead in the Ocean Tunnel and meet some of the local residents too.

Penguin Island is a special walkthrough enclosure, so you can get closer than ever to the cheeky Humboldt penguin colony, then there’s Yorkshire’s only Seal Hospital. They rescue, rehabilitate and release over 50 seals every year. They’re super cute and you get good karma for visiting the patients.

Down in Rainforest Adventure, it’s insects and reptiles that are the main characters (think posion arrow dart frogs and green tree pythons). And no prizes for guessing who’s star of the show at Otter River – the playful Asian short-clawed otters, Eric and Pumpkin, of course.

SEA LIFE Scarborough

Remember to bring your contactless bank card (it’s cashless inside the attraction) and always pre-book online rather than just showing up.

SEA LIFE Scarborough is easy to find (on the North Bay) and it’s usually open 9:30am - 5pm daily, but this can change so it's worth checking the website. Despite restrictions being removed, they still make staff self-isolate if they test positive, and it’s recommended that you wear a mask (unless you’re exempt).

The booking guarantee means you can change your ticket dates online up to three times if the aquarium closes, new restrictions are introduced or you’re ill. It doesn’t apply to premium tickets though.

The security setup is robust and there’s a dedicated team there to keep you safe, under three’s get in for free and there are baby changing facilities. It’s fully accessible but guests with mobility issues have to take a different route around – you’ll get a map when you arrive. There’s a lift upstairs to the turtle sanctuary and restaurant, and carers get in for free (bring proof you’re eligible though).
